We flew into Baltra Island which is 1 of only 5 of the 233 islands that is inhabited. However, Baltra is only inhabited by military personnel for the purpose of operating the airport. It is a very desolate island. We took a small ferry from Baltra to Santa Cruz, the most populated island, and then were driven by truck to our hotel. We made friends with William the driver and he did an amazing job of educating us about the area. Teresa made William and I die laughing when she said the she learned her Spanish “en la calle” (in the street). That afternoon we tour the Charles Darwin Conservatory where they raise tortoises to be released into the wild. There are 4 species of tortoises, each one with a different shell adaptation that allows them to feed on the unique vegetation from respective islands. Lonesome George is the oldest t……………………………
