Colonial City Tour

This afternoon we took a guided tour of the colonial part of the capital city of Ecuador. The architecture is amazing and sad at the same time. The presidential palace is constructed in 3 levels. The 1st level is original Incan structure, the 2nd is colonial, and the 3rd is of French construction. The main plaza in Quito is said to be the most important location in Ecuador because all significant political, social, and religious decisions emanate from the buildings surrounding the plaza.

La Mitad del Mundo

This morning we visited the middle of the earth. It was one of the most scientifically interesting museums I have ever visited. Teresa and I stood in both the nornthern and southern hemispheres at the same time. We watched numerous demonstrations of how the indigenous people kept track of season, told time, and discovered 0 centrifugal force. We also learned more about the Quichua way life and were introduced to the Guarani people who inhabited Ecuadar before the invasion of the Spaniards.
